Mindfulness Therapy in Aberdeen

Mindfulness therapy is very popular at the moment. It can be applied to a variety of issues including stress, mood-related problems, anxiety and much more. There are a number of therapies that incorporate the mindfulness approach including Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Mindfulness is a very ancient practice that involves focusing the mind on the immediate present. This is helpful because it occupies the mind and prevents it from inventing scenarios, which in turn can cause a change in mood.

For example, when we are about to do something new, we may start thinking about times we have failed at a similar task. We may think: “I’m going to fail” or “I failed last time – I’m not good at things like this”. Although these are just thoughts, not reality, they affect our mood all the same. Negative thoughts can cause us to feel sad, angry, guilty, anxious or regretful.

Learning how to practice mindfulness can help us recognise when our minds are wandering. With practice, we can learn to accept our thoughts as simply thoughts and allow them to flow in and out without placing much value on them. Over time, mindfulness can help increase relaxation and overall wellbeing.
