Working with international students

Many students study away from home and it can be a challenging time for them to adjust to being more independent while having less access to their support network. International students may face additional issues which can affect their mental health.

Poor mental health in international students – common issues

  • Less access to support network of family and friends
  • Living in a culture which may be very different from your own
  • Difficulty making friends due to language difficulties in informal settings
  • Increased pressure and financial concerns due to increased family support
  • May not understand how to seek assistance and may worry about expressing themselves in another language

Support for international students

Universities and colleges often provide free support for their students and this is a good place to start if you need to talk to someone about your mental health issues. However, sometimes students need additional support above the limited sessions a university may provide and sometimes students feel uncomfortable about telling their college/university if they are struggling.

If you would like to speak to someone who is not linked to your educational institution and with whom you can work on a self-referred basis, we can help. There are many benefits to seeking therapy privately.
