Art Therapy at First Psychology

Art Therapy, also known as Art Psychotherapy, is a therapeutic approach in which the relationship between client and therapist is supported by creative activities. Art therapy is a medium of expression that can help clients explore and process thoughts, feelings, emotions, and experiences that may be difficult to express verbally.

Developed in the 20th century, art therapy integrates ideas from psychoanalysis, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and other psychological disciplines. Art therapists are registered mental health professionals who are formally trained to work in this way.

The process

Within a safe therapeutic relationship, clients may engage in creative activities such as drawing, painting, or sculpting alongside talking therapy. As with any other therapeutic approach, art therapy provides insight, self-compassion, and a sense of agency by creating an accepting and non-judgmental environment where a client can work through their issues and concerns.

Art therapy is inclusive and suitable for people of all ages, backgrounds, and life circumstances.

Will I need artistic skills or talent to do art therapy?

The focus of this approach is on using creative expression to support insight, emotional regulation, and personal growth rather than on producing ‘good’ artwork. No artistic skill or prior experience is therefore necessary as the emphasis is on the process rather than the outcome.
